Each month, we’ll introduce you to one of our up-and-coming Bulldogs stars. This month, we’d like you to meet Joe Wall, or “J-Wall” as he’s known by some of his teammates. In his first full season with the Dogs, Joe has been impressive. A stand-out performance in the Western regional tournament backed up by a solid showing against Minnesota last week, means Joe is a serious contender to play in the Division 1 team in Nationals in October.

Here’s a little Q and A so you can get to know Joe:

Q: What sports did you play prior to giving Aussie Rules footy a go?

I was always very competitive and active in sports growing up, some of my favorite sports were football, baseball and basketball. In high school, I was a competitive swimmer for the Brighton High School Men’s swim team and my main events were the 500 and 200-yard freestyle.

Q: What attracted you to footy?

I joined Aussie rules because I enjoyed the competitive, physical nature of the sport and I was looking for a fun way to get into better shape.

Q: Favorite part of the game now?

My favorite part of the equal parts of technique, physicality, and team work needed to win a match.

Q: Best memory as a Bulldog so far?

The most notable experience I have had as a Bulldog so far would be traveling to Portland, OR to play in the Westerns tournament. This was my first tournament, so everything was brand new to me. The pace of the games was much faster than they had been in the metro league games, and I really enjoyed the intensity. Despite it being my first match, the nerves were eliminated due to the strong preparation that we had as a team leading up to the tournament, this group of guys made it a point of emphasis to get me ready to play and I really appreciated that. Also, my rookie shot after the game wasn’t half bad either.

Q: What are your personal goals for this year?

My goals for this year are to play well in our upcoming games against Minnesota and Austin, and hopefully earn some division 1 playing time at nationals later this year. And of course, TO WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

Thanks Joe for being one of many great new players this year. Excited to continue to watch you grow!
